When to see a Specialist

Endodontists are specialists who have practices wholly committed to saving teeth and there are around 200 in the UK. There are also dentists who have “a special interest in endodontics” and because of their additional training are able to provide root canal treatment. They mostly work with an operating microscope which allows them to see inside your tooth with magnification and perform treatment with precision. Some general dentists treat their patients themselves while others refer their patients to an endodontist, especially in the most complex cases. It is imperative that patients understand their choices.

Here are some of the questions you might ask:

  • What are the implications of the infection in my tooth?
  • How complex is the treatment I need?
  • What is the likely success rate?
  • Do I need a referral for specialist treatment ?

General Dental Council guidelines state that patients should be referred when necessary.

Always discuss choices with your dentist.
